21 Killed In Attacks On Benue Communities By Suspected Fulani Herdsmen

fulani cattle rearersSeparate attacks on Benue communities by suspected Fulani herdsmen claimed 21 lives over the weekend.

The Benue communities that were attacked include Apera, Gberija, Tse Pilla, Uchagh, Ukaha, Atenger, Agema and Agule in Guma where six persons were killed while another 15 were killed at Oguchi-Ankpa in Agatu local government area by the invaders.

A source from Guma local government council said, “They marched into our villages from Awe in Nasarawa State and passed through Damko before invading and burning down eight villages in Guma local government.

“Unfortunately, the herdsmen stormed the affected villages when most men had gone to their farms and since we thought that the persistent crisis had been settled by both the Benue and Nasarawa state governments, we were not prepared for the surprise attack.

“They killed six of our people who were mostly women, because they were at home preparing meals for their husbands and children who had gone to their farms at the time of the attack.

“Several persons were seriously injured while many are still missing as at today and no one has a clue as to their whereabouts.

“In fact this latest attack has brought to the fore the need for both the Benue and Nasarawa state governments to take a closer look at overhauling the security apparatus operating on the border between the two states,” he said.

Meanwhile, Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has charged the people of the state to be vigilant and report suspicious movements in the communities to security agencies, following the weekend invasion of Benue communities by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Speaking yesterday at the Catholic Church, Oshigbudu after inspecting the damage at Enogaje, one of the communities earlier attacked by the marauders, Suswam urged the people to “be security conscious and report suspicious movements to the relevant security agencies”.

Woman fakes own kidnapping, demands N200,000 ransom from husband

fake kidnappingThe police in Enugu State has arrested a house wife, for stage-managing her own kidnapping and demanding the sum of N200, 000 from her husband Marcus Chukwu as ransom.

Also arrested in connection with the crime is her collaborator in the crime, one Chikwe Tochukwu, a commercial motorcycle operator.

DailyPost gathered that Marcus, a native of Agbogugu in Awgu local Government Area of Enugu State, had received a call from his wife, Nancy Chukwu, claiming that she had been abducted by unknown gunmen and that her abductors were demanding the sum of two hundred thousand naira.

The suspects thereafter gave Marcus an account number where the said ransom is to be paid.

However, instead of paying the ransom, Marcus reported the matter to the anti-kidnap unit of the police.

The police spokesman in Enugu State, Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, who confirmed the incident to DailyPost, disclosed that investigations conducted revealed that Tochukwu of Amakwe Okeremiri Aboh Mbaise in Imo state, residing at Agbogugu was the brain behind the stage managed kidnap, which was aimed at reaping off the woman’s husband.

In his confession to the police, Tochukwu said he is an okada rider that usually conveys Nancy home anytime she is returning from market, adding that Nancy lured her into the crime.

He further confessed that while he was together with Nancy, he used a tone suggestive of a kidnapper already holding Nancy under captivity, and demanded that the sum of two hundred thousand naira is to be paid as a ransom to the account number provided, which he also claimed belonged to his friend Chikwado.

On her part, Nancy, who also confessed to the crime, said she never knew what came over her prompting such behaviour.

“A full scale investigations into the alleged incident has intensified”, Amaraizu further stated.

Man killed by hit-and-run motorists

man killed by okadaSome residents of the Olopomeji end of Oworonshoki Expressway, Lagos State on Monday cried after one of them, identified only as Emmanuel, was crushed by a vehicle while attempting to cross the expressway.

PUNCH Metro learnt that after the deceased was knocked down by the vehicle, other oncoming vehicles heading towards the Third Mainland Bridge also ran over him.

It was learnt that the corpse was left on the road for hours until emergency officials arrived the scene.

When our correspondent visited the scene, relatives of the deceased were seen crying while the corpse was being conveyed into an ambulance.

Our correspondent also observed a pedestrian bridge about 60 metres from where the incident occurred.

Residents, however, blamed the government over the incident.

PUNCH Metro had reported on June 11, 2013 that the Chairman, Kosofe Local Government, Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Sofola,  ordered the sealing of the pedestrian bridge due to its derelict state.

It had also been reported that the bridge, which was constructed by the Federal Government in the 1970s had been in a state of disrepair for over two years.

Speaking with our correspondent at the scene on Monday, the General Secretary, Council of Oworonshoki Youth Forum, Babajide Kabiawu, described Emmanuel’s death as an avoidable tragedy.

He said the deceased, who was also his friend, was not married and his mother was an employee of the state government.

He added that it was because of the dilapidated state of the bridge that the deceased resorted to crossing the road. He said at least four others had been injured recently while attempting to cross the expressway.

He said the condition of the bridge was regrettable, as the community had made representations to the government without getting results.

He said, “In 2011, when we lodged complaints about this bridge, a representative of the Federal Ministry of Works, South West Zone, was here. He promised to write a report to the headquartres in Abuja. But it is saddening that up till now, nothing has been done about it. Is it when lives are involved that they will be bothered?’’

When contacted on the telephone, the assistant Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, confirmed Emmanuel’s death to our correspondent.

“The incident occurred around 4am on Monday. No vehicle was identified but the corpse has been recovered,” he said.

LAGBUS crushes soldier to death in Lagos

Lagbus crushes soldierTragedy struck on Monday on the Funsho Williams Avenue bypass, Surulere, Lagos State, after a yet-to-be identified soldier was crushed to death by a LAGBUS, one of the buses in the state mass transit scheme.

Commuters plying the bridge could not help but watch in horror as the mangled body of the soldier was cut into two by the bus.

Eyewitnesses said the  victim  who was riding a motorcycle, was also carrying a woman on the back seat. The passenger was reportedly flung away by the impact of the collision.

She was said to be in a critical condition and had been taken to an unknown hospital in the state.

It was further learnt that the bus driver, after seeing the extent of the damage, removed his uniform and fled the scene.

The vehicle passengers also took to their heels to avoid reprisals by soldiers.

A mechanic, Taiwo Akindele, said the accident was caused by the bad state of the bridge.

He said, “The accident happened around 7.30am. It involved a red LAGBUS with number ‘30’ written on the body. It did not have a number plate.

“The driver was on top speed, not knowing the bridge was dilapidated. As he approached a bad spot on the bridge, the vehicle began to swerve dangerously towards the left of the bridge.

“But the driver turned the steering and the soldier, who was on a motorcycle, was pinned to the railing of the bridge. As the bus driver strived to control it, the bus dragged the soldier and cut through his bowel. He died on the spot.”

Akindele added that other soldiers arrived at the scene around 10am, while their presence caused panic in the area.

A Lagos State ambulance, which came to evacuate the deceased, was reportedly chased away by the angry soldiers.

A source said, “The whole place was filled with heavy military presence. Everybody was afraid. The soldiers later called in their own vehicle to carry the corpse. They were armed and looked menacing.”

He said the accident also drew the presence of members of the Federal Road Safety Corps and policemen.

A trader under the bridge told our correspondent that there had been four of such accidents within a space of three months due to the condition of the bridge.

Our correspondent observed that two connecting slabs of the bridge were almost pulling apart which usually forced drivers to move slowly when they got to the point.

Around 2pm, another tragedy was averted when a petrol tanker belonging to AP, and marked XA 273 AUG, broke down after the driver’s compartment caved in.

The driver had applied the brake when the incident happened. He was however able to escape without much injuries.

A resident who pleaded anonymity said, “This is not the first time we will be witnessing accidents here. We all are afraid for our lives.”

Another resident, Biodun Falola pleaded with the government to do something about the bridge which had become a death trap.

The Managing Director of LAGBUS, Mr. Babatunde Disu, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, adding that the driver had been handed over to the police.

He said, “He only ran away as a safety precaution. We have since handed him over to the police for further investigations.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, when contacted, said she was in a meeting and would get back to our correspondent.

Virgin Mary Apparition Appeared In Philadelphia Bush 60 Years Ago This Week

virgin mary photos

Sixty years ago this week, the Virgin Mary appeared for three Catholic school girls in a Philadelphia park bush, prompting tens of thousands of pilgrimages.

On Sept. 18, 1953, the girls were on their way home from St. Gregory's Roman Catholic parochial school. On the perimeter of Fairmount Park, Margaret Keville, Mary Hagerty and Roseann Pinto, all 14 years old, saw a vision of Mary in a blue veil and white gown, City Paper reports.

Their claim sent 70,000 believers and gawkers to the site by October of that year. Many visitors said they felt a breeze and the scent of roses coming from the bush, while others said the bush had healing powers. Meanwhile, some church officials claimed the whole thing was a "mass hallucination," the paper reported.

Rumor had it that her visage would appear again on Oct. 25 in 1953, but she didn't show up. By that time, the bush was adorned with rosaries, prayer cards and more than $53,000 in cash (adjusted for inflation). The crowds began to dwindle shortly after the botched event, but the bush -- and a wooden cross -- still stand at the site today.

A photo (above) titled "1953 Miracle at Fairmount Park" and kept at Temple University Libraries, shows an emotional crowd gathering around the bush. The City Paper reports that the bush and a shrine dedicated to it were posted on tourism materials until 1983.

There are still plenty of people talking about their memories of the "miracle" online.

Mary shows herself in many forms and many places, at least according to the people who see her. In May, an Ohio couple claims the Virgin Mary appeared in a photo they took of their daughter, who was battling leukemia at the time.

Late last year, there were two sightings in the New York area. Onlookers were especially excited about a tree trunk that showed her sacred image in Sleepy Hollow. Less than two weeks earlier, hundreds flocked to yet another tree trunk sighting in West New York.

Crocodile Lies In Wait Under Sleeping Man’s Bed

crocodile

In Zimbabwe, if there’s a monster hiding under your bed, it may just be an 8-foot crocodile.

Guy Whittall recently discovered as much when he heard a maid scream from his room at the Humani Ranch one morning. The 40-year-old had managed to sleep the entire night without noticing there was a crocodile under his bed.

According to Caters News Agency, Whittall blissfully slept more than eight hours on the low-lying bed, completely unaware of what was concealed beneath. The former cricket player, who currently serves as director of the family-owned lodge, even recalled hanging his feet over the side of his bed for some time in the morning.

“The really disconcerting thing about the whole episode is the fact that I was sitting on the edge of the bed that morning, barefoot and just centimeters away from the croc,” Whittall said, according to The Telegraph.

After the uninvited guest was exposed, animal control workers were called, and a team roped and dragged the estimated 330-pound creature back to the wild. The crocodile is believed to have come from the Turgwe River, located more than a mile from the ranch.
